Pregabalin (Neuryl®): A Guide for Neuropathy, Epilepsy & Anxiety Relief

✔️ Medically Reviewed by: Dr. Ahmad Baker, PharmD

What is Neuryl®?

Neuryl® is a medication containing the active ingredient pregabalin. It is available in capsule form, with two strengths: 75mg and 150mg. Pregabalin is an analogue of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a naturally occurring neurotransmitter in the brain.

What is Neuryl® Used For?

Neuryl® is used to treat a variety of conditions in adults, including:

Neuropathic Pain

Neuryl® is indicated for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain arises from damage to the nervous system, resulting in abnormal pain signals. Examples include:

  • Diabetic neuropathy: Nerve damage caused by diabetes.
  • Postherpetic neuralgia: Pain persisting after shingles.
  • Spinal cord injury: Nerve pain stemming from spinal cord damage.

Epilepsy

Neuryl® is used as an add-on therapy for adults with partial seizures with or without secondary generalisation. This means it’s used alongside other anti-epileptic medications to help control seizures that affect only one part of the brain and may spread to other areas.

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Neuryl® is also prescribed for the treatment of GAD in adults. GAD is characterised by persistent and excessive worry and anxiety about various aspects of life.

How is Neuryl® Taken?

Dosage

The dosage of Neuryl® varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. It typically ranges from 150mg to 600mg per day, taken in two or three divided doses.

  • Neuropathic Pain: The starting dose is usually 150mg daily. Your doctor may gradually increase this to a maximum of 600mg daily based on your response and how well you tolerate the medication.
  • Epilepsy: Similar to neuropathic pain, treatment begins at 150mg daily and can be increased up to a maximum of 600mg daily.
  • GAD: Dosage for GAD also ranges from 150mg to 600mg daily, with adjustments made over time based on your response and tolerance.

Mode of Administration

Neuryl® capsules should be swallowed whole with water. They can be taken with or without food.

Important Precautions and Warnings

Before taking Neuryl®, it’s crucial to be aware of potential precautions and warnings:

  • Hypersensitivity: Do not take Neuryl® if you are allergic to pregabalin or any of its ingredients.
  • Diabetic Patients: If you have diabetes, your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication as Neuryl® can cause weight gain.
  • Hypersensitivity Reactions: Allergic reactions, including angioedema (severe swelling), have been reported. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like facial or airway swelling.
  • Dizziness, Drowsiness, and Mental Function: Neuryl® can cause dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, confusion, and mental impairment. Be cautious, especially elderly individuals, as these effects can increase the risk of falls. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Neuryl® affects you.
  • Vision Problems: Neuryl® can cause blurred vision and other visual disturbances. While these often improve with continued treatment, in some cases, they may persist. If you experience any vision changes, consult your doctor promptly.
  • Kidney Impairment: Neuryl® is primarily eliminated through the kidneys. If you have kidney problems, your doctor will adjust your dosage accordingly.
  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Stopping Neuryl® suddenly can lead to withdrawal symptoms like insomnia, headache, anxiety, and seizures. Always taper off the medication gradually as directed by your doctor.
  • Heart Failure: Neuryl® may worsen heart failure in some individuals, especially older adults with pre-existing heart conditions. Use with caution and monitor for symptoms.
  • Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours: There is a small risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in people taking anti-epileptic medications, including pregabalin. Be aware of this risk and seek medical help immediately if you experience such thoughts.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Neuryl® can slow down movement in the gut, potentially leading to constipation or intestinal obstruction, particularly when taken with opioid painkillers. Inform your doctor of any constipation issues.
  • Drug Abuse: Neuryl® has the potential for misuse. Be aware of this risk, especially if you have a history of substance abuse.
  • Lactose Intolerance: Neuryl® contains lactose. Avoid taking it if you have lactose intolerance.

Possible Side Effects

Neuryl® can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. The most common side effects include:

  • Dizziness
  • Somnolence (sleepiness)
  • Increased appetite
  • Euphoric mood
  • Confusion
  • Irritability

Other less common side effects are listed in the source document. If you experience any bothersome or persistent side effects, consult your doctor.

Interactions with Other Medications

Neuryl® is generally well-tolerated and does not interact significantly with many medications. However, it’s important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Neuryl® can interact with:

  • Alcohol
  • Lorazépam (a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and sleep problems)
  • Oxycodone (an opioid pain reliever)
  • Opioid painkillers (in general)

These combinations can enhance the effects of Neuryl®, potentially leading to increased drowsiness, dizziness, or respiratory problems.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

  • Pregnancy: There is limited data on the safety of Neuryl® during pregnancy. It’s recommended to avoid using it unless the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the foetus. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding: It’s unknown whether Neuryl® passes into breast milk. However, it is present in the milk of lactating rats. Therefore, breastfeeding while taking Neuryl® is not recommended.

Driving and Using Machines

Neuryl® can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery due to potential side effects like dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid these activities until you know how the medication affects you.

Overdose

In case of an overdose of Neuryl®, seek immediate medical attention.

Conclusion

Neuryl® can be an effective treatment for neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and generalised anxiety disorder. However, it’s essential to use it responsibly and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Understanding the potential side effects, interactions, and precautions associated with Neuryl® empowers you to make informed decisions about your health.
