Furaderm® [nitrofurazone] – Topical Bactericidal

Composition

Each 100 gm contains: Nitrofurazone 0.2 gm.

Pharmacological Action

Furaderm® soluble dressing is a preparation containing 0.2% nitrofurazone in a water-soluble base.

Nitrofurazone is a nitrofuran derivative with a broad spectrum bactericidal activity against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms that cause external infections, including Staphylococci, Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, Aerobacter aerogenes and Proteus.

However, its activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa is limited. It has no effect on fungi or viruses.

Indications

  • Infected wounds including dressing after surgical operations
  • All degrees of burns
  • Pyogenic skin infections, e.g. impetigo,
  • Folliculitis, boils
  • Skin ulcers, bed sores

Contraindications

History of hypersensitivity to nitrofurazone.

Adverse Effects

Furaderm® is safe for topical use, however, it may occasionally cause hypersensitivity reactions, pruritus or contact dermatitis.

Application

Apply Furaderm® directly to the affected skin lesion or first place on gauze. Reapply once daily or every few days depending on the preferred dressing technique.
