When battling the discomforts of a cold or allergies, finding an effective solution can be a game-changer. Cold Control, a film-coated tablet manufactured by the Egyptian Group for Pharmaceutical Industries (EGPI), offers a combination of active ingredients designed to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms associated with these conditions. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll dive deep into understanding Cold Control, its composition, and how it can help you find relief.

What is Cold Control?

Cold Control is a film-coated tablet that combines two active ingredients: Acetaminophen (500 mg) and Diphenhydramine HCl (12.5 mg). Acetaminophen is a well-known pain reliever and fever reducer, while Diphenhydramine HCl is an antihistamine that helps provide temporary relief from itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and itching of the nose or throat due to hay fever or other respiratory allergies.

Cold Control, produced by the Egyptian Group for Pharmaceutical Industries (EGPI), is a film-coated tablet containing Acetaminophen (500 mg) and Diphenhydramine HCI (12.5 mg). Acetaminophen acts as a pain reliever and fever reducer, while Diphenhydramine HCI serves as an antihistamine for relief from symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, and itching due to allergies.

Key Ingredients

Acetaminophen (500 mg)

Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic medication. It works by elevating the pain threshold and acting on the hypothalamic heat regulation center, providing effective relief from pain and fever. Acetaminophen is considered equal to aspirin in terms of analgesic and antipyretic effectiveness.

Diphenhydramine HCl (12.5 mg)

Diphenhydramine HCl is an antihistamine that helps alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms associated with allergies and colds. It provides temporary relief from itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and itching of the nose or throat due to hay fever or other respiratory allergies.

Pharmacokinetics

The tablets are rapidly absorbed and distributed in the body, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within hours of ingestion. Indications for use include various allergy symptoms, headaches, and minor aches and pains.

Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring about 10 to 60 minutes after oral administration. It is distributed into most body tissues and metabolized predominantly in the liver. The elimination half-life varies from about 1 to 3 hours, and it is excreted in the urine.

Diphenhydramine HCl

Diphenhydramine HCl is well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring about 1 to 4 hours after oral doses. It is widely distributed throughout the body, including the central nervous system (CNS). It is highly bound to plasma proteins, and the elimination half-life varies from about 2.4 to 9.3 hours. It is excreted in the urine.

Indications

Cold Control is indicated for the relief of runny nose, sneezing, headache, minor aches and pains, itching of the nose or throat, and itchy, watery eyes due to hay fever or other respiratory allergies.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults and Children 12 years and over: Take 2 film-coated tablets every 4 to 6 hours, not exceeding 8 film-coated tablets in 24 hours.
  • Children below 12 years: Do not use this adult product.

Recommended dosage for adults and children over 12 is 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours, not exceeding 8 tablets in 24 hours. However, caution is advised, especially in patients with certain medical conditions or those consuming alcohol, as the medication may cause sedative effects and liver damage if overdosed. Cold Control is contraindicated in individuals under 12 years old and in those taking MAOIs.

Contraindications

  • Cold Control should not be used in combination with any other product containing acetaminophen or diphenhydramine.
  • It is contraindicated for patients currently taking or within 2 weeks of stopping a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) drug.
  • Do not use in children below 12 years of age.

Side Effects

Cold Control may cause some sedative effects, such as drowsiness and incoordination. These sedative effects, when they occur, may diminish after a few days of treatment.

Drug Interactions

  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Cold Control is contraindicated for use with MAOIs or within 2 weeks of stopping an MAOI drug.
  • Diphenhydramine and CYP2D6: Diphenhydramine inhibits the CYP2D6 enzyme, which is partly responsible for the metabolism of certain beta-blockers (e.g., metoprolol) and the antidepressant venlafaxine.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Cold Control should not be used by pregnant or nursing mothers.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Alcohol Consumption: Acetaminophen may cause liver damage when combined with alcohol. Consult a doctor before use if you consume alcohol.
  • Glaucoma: Seek medical advice before use if you have glaucoma.
  • Urinary Tract Issues: Consult a doctor if you have trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland.
  • Respiratory Problems: Exercise caution if you have a breathing problem, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

  • Overdose: Taking more than the recommended dose (overdose) may cause liver damage.

Storage

  • Store Cold Control film-coated tablets at a temperature not exceeding 30°C (86°F) in a dry place.
  • The carton box contains one or two strips of 10 film-coated tablets, along with an inner leaflet.
