Tetra ® Ophthalmic Ointment

Composition

Each 1 gm of Tetra® Ophthalmic Ointment contains:

  • Oxytetracycline HCL equivalent to Oxytetracycline 5 mg.
  • Polymyxin B sulphate equivalent to Polymyxin B 10, 000 units.

Pharmacological Properties

Tetra® Ophthalmic Ointment is a combination of: 

1-Oxytetracycline which is a broad spectrum antibacterial agent belonging to the family of tetracycline antibiotics and is primarily bacteriostatic, exerting its effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis and it is effective against many Gram-negative and Gram-postive groups of organisms including:

  • Chalmydia trachomatis Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Haemophilus influenzae

2-Polymyxin B sulphate 10, 000 IU is a topical bactericidal agent with a spectrum of activity similar to colistin derivatives. It is effective against:

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Haemophilus influenzae (acting synergistically with oxytetracycline)

Indications and Usage

Tetra® Ophthalmic Ointment is used topically in the treatment of superficial infections of the eye caused by sensitive bacteria especially for:

1. Bacterial ophthalmic infections: Superficial ocular infections; conjunctivitis, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis.

2. Chlamydial ophthalmic infections: Used topically either alone or as adjunct to oral anti-infective therapy in the treatment of trachoma

3. Prophylaxis of ophthalmia neonatorum

Adverse Effects

Tetra® is usually well tolerated, transient stinging or burning sensation occasionally occurs in some cases and usually does not require discontinuation of treatment, expect if severe hypersensitivity develops to any of the ingredients.

Precautions and contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the components in the formulation

Dosage

1) For bacterial ophthalmic infections: A small ribbon of Tetra® Ophthalmic Ointment (1cm) is applied to lower conjunctival fornix of each eye at bed time ( if anti-infective drops are used) or 2-4 times daily if Tetra® Ophthalmic Ointment is used alone.

2) For Chlamydial ophthalmic infections: For the treatment of trachoma, a small ribbon of Tetra® Ophthalmic Ointment is applied to each eye, twice daily for 2 months, used either alone or in conjunction with an oral anti-infective agent.

Patient Information: To avoid contamination, do not touch applicator tip and replace cap after use.
