Salbovent 2 Mg Syrup Salbutamol Sulphate – Bronchodilator

Indications: Salbovent is indicated for the relief of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway diseases, bronchial asthma of all types, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Because of their selective action on the bronchi and their minimal effect on the cardiovascular system, Salbovent is suitable for treating bronchospasm in patients with co-existing heart disease or hypertension.

As β2 receptors cells are also found in the smooth muscles of the uterus, Salbovent causes relaxation of uterine smooth muscle.

Dosage & Administration

As directed by the physician or as follows:

  • Adults: 4 mg, 3-4 times daily. If adequate bronchodilation is not obtained, each single dose may be gradually increased to as much as 8 mg.
  • Children Under 2 years: 100 mcg/kg 4 times daily
  • Children 2-6 years: 1-2 mg 3-4 times daily
  • Children 6-12 years: 2 mg 3-4 times daily
  • Children Over 12 years: 2-4 mg, 3-4 times daily
  • In elderly pateints: it is advisable to initiate treatment with 2 mg 3-4 times daily

Pharmacological Actions

Salbutamol is a β 2 adrenergic stimulant which has a highly selective action on the receptor cells of the smooth muscles in the bronchioles and in therapeutic dosage, little or no action on the cardiac receptors, therefore its bronchodilating action is relatively more prominent than its effect on the heart.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of this medication.
  • Thyrotoxicosis.
  • Threatened abortion during the first or second trimesters.

Side Effects

A fine tremor of skeletal muscle may occur in some patients and is noticeable usually in the hands. This effect is dose related and is common with all ẞ adrenergic stimulants.

Some patients may experience a feeling of tenseness which is due the effects on the skeletal muscle and not due to direct CNS stimulation.

Peripheral vasodilation and a compensatory small increase in heart rate may occur in patients who are unusually sensitve to beta-adrenergic stimulants, or in the event of administering doses higher than those recommended. Occasional headaches have been reported.

There have been very rare reports of transient muscle cramps and hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema, urticaria, bronchospam, hypotension and collapse.

Other side effects include tachycardia and arrhythmias and disturbances of sleep and behavior of children.

Potential hypokalemia may also occur.

Drug Interactions

  • Salbovent may interact with sympathomimetic bronchodilators.
  • Use with Diuretics and Xanthines may augment hypokalemia.
  •  Salbovent should not be prescribed with non selective beta-blocking drugs such as propranolol.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, therefore, salbutamol should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. As salbutamol is probably secreted in breast milk, its use in nursing mothers is not recommended unless the expected benefits out weigh any potential risks.

Precautions & Warning

Salbovent should be used with caution in cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes.
Precautions must be taken when taken the drug during pregnancy, lactation and in the elderly.
