Composition
Each enteric coated tablet contains:
- Bisacodyl: 5 mg.
- Dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate: 100 mg.
Pharmacological Properties
Minalax® has a dual action.
1-Bisacodyl acts as a contact laxative, by direct effect on colonic mucosa. It stimulates the local parasympathetic reflexes, resulting in increasing peristaltic contractions of the colon without affecting the small intestine. As bisacodyl acts locally, it is used safely and satisfactorily in all patients even those with ganglionic blockage or spinal cord damage.
2-Dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate (docusate sodium) acts as an emulsifying agent, which leads to stool softening that allows easier passage of the stool. As a stool softener, straining while defecation cab be avoided.
The combination of dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate together with bisacodyl is considered to be the ideal laxative, as it facilitates regular elimination of the stool in impaction-prone and elderly patients.
So Minalax® is indicated whenever straining must be avoided as in cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, hemorrhoids, anorectal and some other disease.
Indications
For the treatment of all forms of constipation, either acute, chronic or recurrent.
For bowel evacuation either as preparation for radiography, sigmoidoscopy and proctoscopy or as preoperative preparation in gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeries.
For the prevention of constipation whenever straining is better to be avoided as in pregnant or postpartum women, elderly, patients with painful anal conditions (fissures and/or hemorrhoids) and those with cardiovascular diseases.
