Ibiamox® [amoxycillin] – Broad Spectrum Antibiotic

Composition

  • Capsule: Each capsule contains amoxycillin trihydrate equivalent to 250 or 500 mg amoxicillin.
  • Dry Syrup: Each 5 ml after reconstitution contains amoxycillin trihydrate equivalent to 125 or 250 or 200 or 400 mg amoxycillin.
  • Tablet: Each tablet contains amoxycillin trihydrate equivalent to 1 g amoxicillin.
  • Injection: Each vial contains amoxycillin sodium equivalent to 250, 500, or 1000 mg amoxycillin.

Properties

Amoxycillin (Ibiamox®) is a semisynthetic penicillin with a broad spectrum antibacterial action.

Amoxycillin (Ibiamox®) is well absorbed by oral route and gives very high serum and tissues levels irrespective of the presence of food. It also has a very low incidence of side effects.

Amoxycillin (Ibiamox®) exerts a broad spectrum bactericidal action against several Gram +ve and Gram –ve bacteria.

Gram positive bacteria

  • Staph.aureus.
  • Strept.pyogenes.
  • Strept.viridans.
  • Strept. faecalis.
  • Diplococcus pneumoniae.
  • Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
  • Clostridium species.
  • Bacillus anthracis.

Gram negative bacteria

  • Salmonella species.
  • Shigella species
  • Escherichia coli.
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Neisseria meningitidis
  • Neisseria gonorrhoea.
  • Bordetella pertussis.
  • Proteus mirabilis.

Indications

Mild and moderate infections:

  • E.N.T.infections
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
  • Gastrointestinal tract infections
  • Typhoid fever
  • Urogenital infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Severe infections:
  • Septicaemia
  • Peritonitis
  • Bacterial endocarditis
  • Osteomyelitis

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Dosage

Adults dosage

Mild and moderate infections: 500 to 1000 mg 3 or 4 times daily by oral, I.M. or I.V.route.

Severe Infections: 1000 mg 4 or 6 times dialy by oral, I.M. or I.V. route.

Gonarrhea: 3 g as a single oral dose.

Children dosage

50 to 100 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses (every 8 hours). For children weighting more than 20 kg, the dose should be adjusted according to the adult dose.

How Supplied

  • Capsule: Blister of 12 capsules each of 250 or 500 amoxycillin.
  • Tablet: Blister of 8 tablets each of 1000 mg amoxycillin.
  • Syrup: Bottle of 60 ml dry syrup in powder form of 125, 200, 250, or 400 mg amoxicillin.
  • Injections: Vial of 250, 500, or 1000 mg amoxicillin.

N.B.: Syrup should be used within 7 days after reconstitution.
