The body mass index (BMI) is used to define nutritional status. It is derived from the formula, weight (kg)/height (m2). The acceptable (normal) range is 20-25. Obesity is taken to start at a BMI of 30 and gross obesity at 40. Weights between ‘acceptable’ and ‘obese’ are classified as overweight (BMI 25.0 to 29.9).
