Epicophylline syrup – Acefylline piperazine

Epicophylline is a bronchodilator medicine used in the treatment of asthma. It helps in relaxing the muscles of the air passages, thus widening it and making it easier to breathe. Epicophylline is taken without food in a dose and duration as advised by the doctor. The dose you are given will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen. Let your healthcare team know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, restlessness, insomnia, and irritability. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any of these side effects.

Before taking this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases so that your doctor can prescribe a suitable dose for you. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Composition

  • Each 100 ml contains : Piperazine theophylline ethanoate (Acefylline piperazine) 2.5 g.
  • Each 5 ml contains: 125 mg Acefylline piperazine.

Properties

Epicophylline syrup contains the most soluble theophylline derivative that is piperazine theophylline ethanoate, so it has excellent efficacy. It has the advantage that it is 4 – 7 times less toxic than theophylline. Epicophylline syrup being used in divided doses, so it is the most suitable form for children and infants as well as elderly patients.

Indications

  • All types of asthma in children, adults and the elderly.
  • Dyspnoea at any age.
  • Emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Dosage

  • Adults: 3-5 tablespoonfuls daily.
  • Children: 2-6 teaspoonfuls daily.
  • Infants (6-12 months): 1-2 teaspoonfuls daily.
