Cortilon® – fludrocortisone

Composition

Each tablet contains: Fludrocortisone acetate: 0.1 mg.

Properties

Fludrocortisone (Cortilon®) is a potent mineralcorticoid, which enhances reabsorption of sodium ions and water from kidney to plasma with marked sodium and water retention leading to increase in blood pressure, and increase in urinary excretion of both potassium and hydrogen ions.

Fludrocortisone (Cortilon®) is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration it is mainly metabolized in the liver and mostly eliminated by renal excretion.

Indications

  • In all types of hypotension including orthostatic hypotension especially after prolonged confinement to bed due to illness or surgery.
  • Replacement therapy for primary and secondary adrenocortical insufficiency in Addison’s disease.
  • Salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome

Contraindications

  • Hypertension
  • All illnesses with tendency towards edema, e.g., cardiac insufficiency, hepatic cirrhosis, nephrosis.
  • Known hypersensitivity to fludrocortisone.

Precautions

  • During pregnancy and lactation, it is only used when essential.
  • Adequate potassium intake must be ensured during prolonged therapy.

Side Effects

Slight increase in body-weight gain, mild transient edema. These side effects may be reduced upon continuous medication or with lower dosage, if needed.

Dosage and administration

Depends on the severity of the disease and the response of the patient. The average dose is 1-3 tablets/dayز

If symptoms begin to disappear, the dose should be reduced. The largest part of the dose should be taken in the morning.

Strips of 10 tablets in packs of 2 strips.
