Citrocid Magnesium Plus is indicated for: Treatment of hyperoxaluria.

Dosage & Administration

One sachet to be dissolved in half glass of water and taken during effervescencing, two times daily or as prescribed by the physician.

Composition

Each sachet (5 gm) contains active ingredient: 0.255 mg Magnesium Oxide (12.655 mEq Mg2), 1.56 mg Citric acid monohydrate (Equivalent to 1.42 g citric acid anhydrous), 1.16 mg Citric acid anhydrous, 0.05 mg Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCI).

Inactive ingredients: Sodium bicarbonate, Sodium carbonate and Saccharin Sodium.

Pharmacological Action

Citrocid magnesium plus effervescent granules contain three components for treatment of hyperoxaluria.

Alkaline citrate is commonly used to prevent the recurrence of calcium stones. It acts as urinary alkalaniser and increases citrate excretion. Citrate forms complexes with calcium to reduce urinary saturation of calcium salts and inhibits crystallization.

Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6): Water soluble vitamin is involved mainly in amino acid metabolism but is also involved in carbohydrate and fat metabolism, treat metabolic disorders such as primary hyperoxaluria.

Magnesium: Magnesium is a known inhibitor of the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in the urine and was proposed for prophylactic treatment in renal stone disease.

Contra-Indications

  • Severe renal impairment
  • Acute dehydration, heat cramps, anuria, severe myocardial damage.

Warnings & Precautions

Oral magnesium salts should be used cautiously with renal impairment, taking with food may decrease the incidence of diarrhea. Chronic diarrhoea from long-term use may result in electrolyte imbalance.

Monitor electrolyte balance and acid-base balance regularly especially in patients with renal disorders. Patients with low urine output, congestive heart failure, hypertension, renal dysfunction, peripheral or pulmonary oedema, or toxaemia of pregnancy.

Pregnancy And Lactation

Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with magnesium and citrate. It is also not known whether magnesium or citrate can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. The product should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

Caution should be exercised when magnesium and citrate is administered to a nursing woman

Adverse Effects

Long-term use of large doses of pyridoxine is associated with the development of severe peripheral neuropathies; the dose at which these occur is controversial.

Citric acid ingested frequently or in large quantities may cause erosion of the teeth and have a local irritant action.

Hypermagnesaemia is uncommon after oral magnesium salts except in the presence of renal impairment. Ingestion of magnesium salts may cause gastrointestinal irritation and watery diarrhoea.

Other Information

Drug Interaction

Oral doses of citrate may increase intestinal absorption of aluminum ions.

Oral magnesium salts decrease the absorption of tetracyclines and bisphosphonates, and doses should be separated by a number of hours.

Pyridoxine reduces the effects of levodopa but this does not occur if a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor is also given. Pyridoxine reduces the activity of altretamine. It has also been reported to decrease serum concentrations of phenobarbital and phenytoin. Many drugs may increase the requirements for pyridoxine; such drugs include hydralazine, isoniazid, penicillamine, and oral contraceptives.

Packing

Carton box contains 12 (Kraft/ polyethylene/ aluminum/polyethylene) sachets, each of 5 g effervescent granules.
