Cidamex Tablets

Each tablet contains 250 mg of Acetazolamide.

Cidamex contains Acetazolamide, which acts as a potent inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. As a result, Cidamex possesses the following properties:

  • Cidamex reduces the production of aqueous humor, thereby lowering the intraocular pressure.
  • In the central nervous system, it decreases excessive nerve cell discharges.
  • In the kidneys, it enhances the excretion of bicarbonate ions, leading to increased elimination of sodium, potassium, and water. This can be beneficial in cases of abnormal fluid and salt retention.

Cidamex is used for the following conditions:

  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Secondary glaucoma and before surgeries in cases of narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • As secondary treatment for certain epilepsy seizures.
  • As an adjunct treatment in cases of edema caused by congestive heart failure or certain medications.
  • To prevent altitude-related disorders when ascending mountains and high altitudes.

Do not use Cidamex in the following cases:

  • Severe kidney or liver impairment and adrenal gland insufficiency.
  • Hypersensitivity to sulphonamides.
  • It should not be used as a long-term treatment in cases of chronic non-congestive narrow-angle glaucoma.

Side Effects

Possible side effects of Cidamex include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
  • Prolonged use of the medication may lead to headaches, fatigue, tension, dizziness, increased facial redness, and, in some cases, an altered sense of taste.
  • Long-term use of Cidamex may result in metabolic acidosis and electrolyte imbalances, which can be managed by potassium bicarbonate supplementation.
  • As Cidamex is a sulphonamide derivative, it rarely causes blood abnormalities, including reduced red blood cell count and low platelet count. It may also lead to itching or photosensitivity.

Drug Interactions

Special precautions should be taken when using Cidamex in conjunction with other medications:

  • Acetazolamide may potentiate the effects of certain drugs, such as amphetamines, ephedrine, and quinidine.
  • It diminishes the effects of methamphetamines and its derivatives.
  • Acetazolamide can result in reduced calcium levels in the bones due to its antiepileptic effect.
  • Combining Acetazolamide with aspirin may increase blood acidity and central nervous system toxicity.

Warnings and Precautions

When using Cidamex for extended periods, it is crucial to regularly monitor blood composition and plasma electrolyte levels.

  • Exercise caution when using Cidamex in cases of pulmonary obstruction to avoid exacerbating blood acidity.
  • Special consideration should be given to elderly patients.
  • Consult with a healthcare provider before using the medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Be cautious when using Cidamex in cases where high doses of aspirin are part of the treatment regimen.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Cidamex depends on the specific medical condition, as follows:

  • Standard dosage: One to four tablets daily, divided into separate doses.
  • For epilepsy treatment in children: 8-30 mg per kilogram of body weight daily, with a maximum daily dose of 750 mg.

Cidamex is available in a package containing 20 tablets, divided into two strips, with each strip containing 10 tablets.

Store Cidamex at a temperature below 30 degrees Celsius and with a relative humidity of less than 70 percent.

A Brief Explanation

Cidamex is a medication used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma, a condition that damages the optic nerve due to elevated intraocular pressure.
  • Abnormal epilepsy seizures, which are atypical brain activity episodes.
  • Fluid retention, where excess fluids accumulate in the body.
  • Altitude-related disorders, which can occur when ascending mountains and high altitudes.

Cidamex works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase.
