Composition
Each tablet contain: Bismuth sub-citrate 120 mg.
Properties
Binorec through its colloidal bismuth sub-citrate content enhances mucosal defense and forms a protective layer over the ulcer crater, allowing ulcer healing. Also, colloidal bismuth sub-citrate possesses bactericidal activity against H. pylori. Resistance to colloidal bismuth sub-citrate has not been observed.
Indications
- Ulcer healing.
- Lower relapse rates of ulcer.
- It is essential to be given as a dual or triple therapy for H. pylori eradication in order to prevent the emergence of mutants resistant to certain antibiotics.
Dosage & Administration
2 tablets twice daily.
Contra-Indications
Hypersensitivity to bismuth salts & not recommended during pregnancy.
Drug – Drug interactions
- Concomitant administration of antacids, milk, food and H2-receptor antagonists may impair the efficacy of the drug.
- Nausea, diarrhea and burning of the mouth & throat during triple therapy with amoxycillin & metro nidazole.
- The absorption of iron as well as tetracycline may be decreased as a result of chelate formation.
Side Effects
- Increases in hemoglobin levels.
- Mild reduction in diastolic blood pressure.
- Headache, Dizziness.
- Bismuth encephalopathy upon high doses & long treatment.
- Fecal discoloration.
- Patients with renal impairment show accumulation of bismuth leading to encephalopathy.
