Azithromin is a macrolide antibiotic that supress bacterial protein synthesis with a long half-life and excellent tissue penetration. Azithromin is actively transported to the site of infection due to its high concentration in phagocytes. (Azithromycin concentration in the tissues can be over 50 times higher than in plasma).

Indication & dosage
- Community aquired pneumonia.
- Pharyngitis / tonsillitis.
- Acute otitis media.
- Skin & soft tissue infection.
- Uncomplicated typhoid fever.
Dosage recommended in the previous cases: 500 mg as single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (mild to moderate). Recommended dosage: 500 mg once daily X 3 days (OR) 500 mg as single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
- Acute bacterial sinusitis. Recommended Dosage: 500 mg once daily X 3 days.
- Non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis. Recommended dosage: One single 1 gm dose.
- Gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis– Recommended Dosage: One single 2 gm dose.
