Ambroxol Oral drops/ Liquid: Uses, Dosage& Side effects

Ambroxol oral drops, suitable for infants and children from birth to two years of age. Ambroxol oral drops prescribed to relieve cough, expand the airways, dissolve sputum and facilitate its secretion, these symptoms are usually associated with respiratory diseases (such as bronchitis or bronchitis). Ambroxol works by reducing the viscosity of trachea secretions (reduces the viscosity of the sputum), and thus facilitates the process of expelling these secretions (sputum), and this effect leads to a decrease in cough severity.

Each 1 ml of Ambroxol (0.75%) Oral Drops, contains 7.5 mg of Ambroxol hydrochloride in addition to the other inactive ingredients (excipients).

Each 1 ml of Ambroxol Oral Drops (solution/liquid) corresponds to 20 drops.

  • Infants 6 months of age or younger: 7 drops orally every 12 hours or 0.5 ml every 12 hours.
  • Children 7 to 12 months: 20 drops orally twice daily or 1 ml every 12 hours.
  • Children 1 to 2 years of age: 1.25 ml every 12 hours – or 25 drops by mouth twice daily.
  • Children over 2 years old: It is recommended to switch to ambroxol syrup, because the dose using oral drops (liquid/solution) will not be appropriate or practical in this age group.

The duration of treatment, in most cases, does not exceed 4 to 5 days (the duration of treatment will be determined by the doctor, according to the type and severity of the case and the extent of response to treatment, in addition to other factors).

Precautions and Warnings

  • Ambroxol oral drops should be kept out of the reach of children.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed doses of Ambroxol oral drops, and if the condition does not improve, the dose should not be increased, just consult your doctor.
  • Ambroxol Oral Drops should not be taken simultaneously with any other medicinal products containing the same ingredients, and in order to avoid possible interactions between several medicines, the doctor or pharmacist must be informed of every other treatment the child is undergoing.
  • Ambroxol oral drops should be taken under medical supervision, If the infant suffers from liver or kidney problems that lead to abnormalities in their functions.
  • Ambroxol oral drops should be stored at a temperature below 25°C.

side effects

  • Side effects of Ambroxol drops are rare. In rare cases, diarrhea, indigestion, or skin symptoms such as rash or urticaria may appear.
  • In very rare cases, and like all medicines, Ambroxol oral drops can cause an allergic reaction, if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction (dyspnea, rash, swelling of the face, tongue and lips) stop using the product and seek medical advice.
  • Ambroxol oral drops may contain some types of sugars. It is recommended that you tell your doctor if your child has an intolerance to some sugars.
